Ladder Anxiety

Most of us gamers and supporters of the Starcraft scene have suffered from this so called “Ladder Anxiety” at least at one point or another. Let us all be honest, it is easy to say that we want to be like the pros but doing it is a completely different story. If you think about it though, some of the players we look up to started off exactly like us. All they needed was that one push to help them overcome their obstacles.

One notable pro is GanZi. After seeing BoxeR during the early Broodwar days, he was inspired to be just like him and perhaps better. He did exactly what you and I are doing right now. He laddered and practiced his heart out every day. Where is he now? He is probably one of the best Korean Terrans out there and he was asked by BoxeR himself to join SlayerS at the start of Starcraft 2. I am not saying that it will happen to all of us, but it certainly is not impossible. We all have to start off somewhere.

Personally for me, I enjoy being a spectator more than anything, but being a player helps me appreciate what the pros do more. I picked up Starcraft 2 a year after it came out and I was immediately put in that mindset that everyone was better than me already. On top of that, all of my friends were already at least Gold league or higher. Little by little, I caved. I played my 5 placement matches and only won 1. My first season, I finished 2nd in Bronze, and after losing my next placement match, I felt frustrated. I was one of those players who just kept getting matched up against Silver and Gold but could not seem to get out. I was upset to the point that I did not play for an entire season.

After I came to a realization that cutting corners by “cheesing” will not do it anymore, I decided to do a little research. You might laugh but reading the strategy pages on liquipedia actually helped me. If you have friends who are on a higher league than you, do not be shy to ask for tips and suggestions or even some replay analysis. Chances are, they have been through the same things you have and have overcome it.

The more I played the game though, the more I got to know the people I was up against. Some of them were just naturally bad mannered especially if they know you are new. They just like to take advantage of that fact instead of lending a hand. This was and still is a notorious issue around the lower leagues. Not always the case though. I have met some players through the ladder and events who have been willing to help address my mistakes to prevent them in the future. Believe me, there is plenty of help out there. You just have to look and sometimes ask.

Bottom line is, just because you encounter ignorant people out there does not mean you should listen to them. In reality, there is nothing stopping you so why feel bad about yourself? Sure, losing is not the greatest feeling but you can always learn from it. Part of playing the game is learning your capabilities. It might seem limited now, but the more you put time into it, the more you will gain. Just like White-ra said, “More GG, more skill.”

They Are Gamers Too

Ever wondered why people are so judgmental sometimes? Is it because they are insecure? Jealous perhaps? Whatever the case may be, it Is only ruining our images. This very problem has been quite scandalous especially on the Internet. When you put content out there, it is bound to get criticisms. Some of which are good and heart-warming while others could be bad yet helpful. There also those that are hurtful and just plain ignorant, but those are things you just cannot simply avoid. Makes you wonder sometimes if they were actually thinking before they spoke or in this case, type.

Our community is no exception to this. People tend to say that the StarCraft scene is one of the strongest, most loyal, and respectable out there but what about behind the screen or at their homes? I feel like some gamers take on a different persona once they are online. They could be the sweetest of things in real life but on that screen could be a completely different person. Not just in gaming, but on the Internet in general. I understand the difference though between a reasonable argument and a senseless banter, but we all should be aware of our choice of words at times.

When I was asked to address this issue, I honestly was not shocked and I am pretty sure we all saw this topic coming. Why do the female communities get scrutinized so much? They have not done anything wrong except to expand the community at large. I understand that there are people out there who feel that the girls are only getting their exposure because they are girls but at least be reasonable about it. Partly I agree that since they are girls, they should get the same amount of exposure that men get and at the same time I disagree because these girls worked hard for it and it is well deserved. Their accomplishments and breakthroughs speak for themselves.

In addition to that, there are also those derogatory words thrown out there, and I could honestly say I laughed. I did not laugh because it was funny, but I laughed due to the level of childishness involved. If you think about it, majority of the gaming community is around their teens to maybe late twenties and you would think that they would at least be educated enough to respect others. Sometimes they act as if they have never seen or met a girl before. How do they expect to be respected when they cannot even do the same for others? I am not saying everyone is like that but there are people out there who are.

I feel that a computer or any electronic device is menacing in the wrong hands because they could basically do or say anything they want online to just about anybody and they can act as if nothing happened. The reason they hide behind that computer screen is because they cannot say it personally to someone’s face. They are probably too scared if anything. They are too jealous of others’ success that they have to express their hate to gain attention. Honestly, the more we give them notice, the more they would think that they are succeeding. They are just trying to feed off other’s triumph in the form of negativity.

Next time, do what I do and just ignore them. If anything, those “haters” are the ones who propel your popularity upward. Other than that, they are not worth reasoning with. Like a wise girl once said, “There’s one person I can 100% convince of stuff. Know who that is? Me.” The next time you find yourself in a predicament like such, just shrug it off because they will just be dragging you down. Why stoop to their level when you know you are better than them? Walk away with your chin held high and continue pursuing a better future. Remember, words are just words but your action speaks more.
